Iowa's huge recruiting weekend rolls on with another addition to their 2020 recruiting class.
Brenden Deasfernandes is listed at 6'0" and 161 lbs and the Belleville, MI prospect is rated 2* by 247Sports and currently unranked by Rivals. That lack of a ranking from Rivals ties into his offer sheet, which is, uh, interesting.
Yes, Iowa's other suitors for Deasfernandes were Davenport University, Southeast Missouri State, and Northwood University in Michigan. We're accustomed to seeing some unconventional offer lists from Iowa prospects, but even by those standards Deasfernandes is a deeply under-the-radar recruit.
Deasfernandes got onto Iowa's radar after a strong showing at a camp at Lindenwood University in St. Louis earlier this year. That got him an invite to an Iowa camp a few weeks later, where he impressed again. That led to Iowa offering him this weekend, which Deasfernandes accepted immediately. His highlights give us some indication of how he managed to pique Iowa's curiosity:
He shows some nice coverage skills and some pretty strong tackling ability in those clips, which are certainly things Iowa prioritizes in defensive backs. At just 160 lbs, Deasfernandes is pretty light for a Big Ten defensive back, but he has time to add to that; the fact that he's just 16 years old suggests that he's not done growing yet, either.
But the argument for Deasfernandes really boils down to one thing: In Phil We Trust. Phil Parker's eye for talent and his acumen at developing players at the defensive back position is unmatched, as we've witnessed over the last 20 years. If he sees something in Deasfernandes, we're inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Welcome to Iowa City, Brenden.
