The Hyball is a weekly basketball column

Let's expand from a joke made last week:

Basketball is back, baby.

That's right, a sport where Iowa can score triple digits in points. I want no others to exist.

Though that was made primarily to take shots at the football team, I actually want to spin it this week into more of a positive about the hoopers.

As a fan of both Iowa and Michigan hoops, both teams have kinda ping ponged my attention since I doubled up in 2004. And though Michigan is currently ranked and Iowa is not, I'm actually a little more excited for the Hawkeyes this season.

Why? Offense, yo. Lifeblood, soul-cleansing O.

The best way I can describe it is... you know that feeling after you watch a shitty, cold-weather, putrid Big Ten football game, and then you flip to some sunny SEC/Pac-12/Big 12 game, and the ball is just moving easier. Everything flows. First downs are no longer Sisyphean tasks. And everyone in the stands just looks happier.

That's Iowa basketball, friends. I'm sure you already know this, but my aim is to get us all to appreciate it that much more. Going back to Michigan: I believe their ceiling might be higher, but Iowa's floor is higher, and the day-to-day product is going to be so fucking watchable. That is, like, 80% of the battle in college basketball.

And yes, the Achilles heel will always be defense. We definitely need a rim protector. Issues that have dogged Iowa in the past will likely dog Iowa again, but to have offense -- the precious heart -- shored up? It's a damn nice thing to have in the front pocket. So remember that next time you're watching a rock fight.

"When in doubt, chill out."

Last Week

11/7 - Iowa 89, Bethune-Cookman 58: Literal Euro step.

This is the season's peak until further notice.

This Week

11/11 - Iowa vs. N.C. A&T: Cool.

11/16 - Iowa at Seton Hall: Eh. Cool.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

Ah. Cool.

So fucking hyped for the ladies this season. They brought back, like, everybody, are already ranked in the Top 5, and... have a lot to build on after crashing out of last year's NCAA tourney. Sadly, no Evanston trip on the schedule, so I might have to carve out an IC date to see 'em in person (might = will).

Brad Davison went Michael Myers in Halloween Ends (no one look him up and tell me what he's doing now), so this section will be converted to something more positive: sharing my terrible music recommendations + the accompaniment of an Internet comment. What could go wrong?!

Obligatory Michigan Section

From the take genius who brought you 2020's "Hunter Dickinson is great and on par with Luka Garza" and 2021's "Caleb Houstan's play is perpetually troubling" comes 2022's... Jett Howard, pretty good!

Like the tweet said, he dropped 30 in his exhibition debut before a nice 21 in his real debut. And it's not the scoring, it's the ease of the scoring. Competition, yeah yeah, but some of the stuff is not opponent dependent. More context on that 21:

To make matters better, he might be terrible at rebounding. I am in love.

The Mini-Hybrid

Was talking with my Alabama dad about how wild it is to see the Tide fully eliminated from CFP contention. He then reminded me it's not totally over yet. Then the new CFP rankings came out, and they were at No. 9. I don't know what to believe.

Wrapping It Up...

Headed to KC for a wedding this weekend. Will say what's up to Boulevard and Joe's, IYKYK.
