This is just bonkers. Glad he's okay in general, hope he's okay career-wise.

Someone fucked up big to accidentally shoot someone else.

Indeed.  I'm guessing we're going to hear more about this from the police investigation over time, and the story will make us shake our heads in dismay.  My main thought is "JFC, Can this kid catch a fucking break, already?"  Stoll has had a lot of terrible luck the last few years.  I really hope for him and the team that this injury won't hurt his chances to wrestle in the 18-19 season.  Obviously, we're all rooting hard for you, Sam!

May we soon be making jokes about how he pulled the bullet out of his knee with his bare hands and still was able to knock the gun out of his drunk friend's hand, take him down, and pin him in seven seconds, all while hopping on one leg.

CAUTION: May go on prolonged rants about Gary Barta and Bruce Harreld without warning.

There was too much good news going around the wrestling program, wasn’t there? Damn it.

This is a big blow to our hopes to challenge PSU for the national title this year. Any math we did in our head had our preseason #1 ranked HWT pinning a lot of guys for bonus points and getting deep into placement points.

Now he got shot. In the freaking knee. Not a lot of ways to be optimistic about getting shot in that location and making a full recovery to top-level wrestling in 3-4 months.

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women, and song. The other half I wasted.

Yeah, he'll probably be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life too....

I mean what are we talking about here? Obviously it's never good news to hear that anybody has been shot, but can we at least be honest with ourselves in acknowledging that we have no idea what this does or doesn't mean for the kid?

First of all, he's already been released from the hospital, which would indicate that the wound didn't require some sort of immediate/extensive surgery. Secondly, we don't even know which 'knee' was affected, nor to what degree it was affected. This idea that he can't possibly wrestle this season at a high level (a season that's over five months away, not 3-4) is based on absolutely zero tangible information.

Just last college football season Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis suffered a gunshot wound to his leg the Sunday morning before his team's opener against FSU. Not only did he still play in that game, but he recorded a sack.

Heck, in 2009 (also at Alabama) defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick returned to practice less than 48 hours after being shot in the forearm during an attempted robbery. He also played in the team's opener, recording a tackle against Virginia Tech.

Now maybe those are extreme examples/timelines, but we don't need Stoll ready for a prime time duel meet by next week. The Midlands aren't even for another six months for Christ's sake.

This is certainly unfortunate, not to mention scary news. However, absolutely nothing I've heard or read thus far leaves me worried that the wrestling season is somehow in imminent peril.

It'll probably sound preachy to someone, but can we try to make sure our first response to someone getting shot isn't, "What will this do to his/the season?"

I mean, I don't think that was your purpose of statement, but other fanbases who do that aren't my favorite people, so everyone please try not to do that.  (Or don't, it's still a relatively free country, so whatever.)

Just way too much we don't know.   A gun accidentally discharged.   I don't think we know the type of weapon, how far away from it Stoll was, the angle at which he was hit, anything.   Could have been an angle where it more grazed him and caused some bleeding, a few stitches, and he'll be fine in a week.   Could be worse than that, although how quickly he was discharged is encouraging.   Any opining on whether this will impact his season is rampant speculation.

Also, why was he with a group of individuals at 4:30am on a Tuesday?  Were they going hunting?  Were they going to workout?  Were they partying?

And does Sam maybe need to re-evaluate who his friends are?  If they weren't hunting then why was someone working out/partying on a late Monday/early Tuesday with a gun?

I hope for everyone involved that it was simply:

Dude- - "Hey, let's go lift, but first check out my new baby."  (/pulls shiny new handgun out, safety not on for whatever reason)  (/bang)  "Oh fuck man I didn't mean to!''

Sam- - "It's okay, it just grazed me.  Let's go visit some kids at the hospital."

Mid-June is not hunting season.  I believe the only animal that can be hunted in June are groundhogs.

There is a continuous open season on coyotes, I think.

Also, maybe you can hunt raccoon, although people tend to trap those, right?

I never wanted to Fire Ferentz. Good bye and good luck, Gary.

I partied at a wrestling team house about 15 years ago.  There was a sizeable hole made in a wall, someone literally got thrown through a closed door, and when we went downtown two large bottles of whiskey were handed under the table at the Union after letting everyone in the back door.  I don't remember any guns but an accidental discharge would have been pretty likely if there was one.  Hopefully this isn't an example of Brands team partying that hard.  Especially on a Monday/Tuesday!

Best case scenario:  at the end of a Hawkeye Wrestling practice next fall, Coach Brands yells, "Alright men, give me 10 laps, the last two at full speed, then hit the showers!  Good work in the room today!"  90 seconds later, he hollers "Dammit Stoll, stop dogging it, get the lead out!..."

I have been in more incidents where firearms were being looked at, cleaned, or shot during some long days/nights of drinking then I’d like to admit.  I’m guessing at 4:30am someone was showing of some new hardware.  Totally guessing but there you go.

Since he was discharged later that day it seems like that’s a good sign nonimmediate surgery was needed.

Maybe just a flesh wound?  I just read all the other posts after I wrote this and damn it I’m keeping it in there.  I should have known somebody would beat me to it.

Now I really hope that after Lee walks out to the Pokemon theme song, when Sammy walks out he does so to the Monty Python Holy Grail theme song.

Stoll typically walks out to "Imperial March," which is pretty great, but it would be really funny if he came out to Monty Python for a few matches next year.

Or he could use the music from that scene in The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

The whistle/harmonica (or whatever it is) thing.   Ooooohweooohweoooh  wah wah wah.

UPDATE: Tom Brands has released a statement on Stoll's condition, although it's still pretty light on details.

Glad to hear the surgery went well and hopefully he will make a swift and complete recovery.

There are reasons, and this is certainly one of them, that there are so many and so anal rules about gun safety. Its very difficult to accidentally shoot oneself while cleaning a gun, unless you flagrantly disregard multiple standard gun safety rules. Usually people who shoot themselves "while cleaning" a gun are just fucking around with it and disregard one or more gun safety rules such as "don't pull the trigger (or even put your finger on it) unless you actually want the gun to fire" or "don't point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to see destroyed," or "all guns are always loaded," or my personal favorite: "what is a safety? A safety is a mechanical device which can fail."

Not speculating on what happened or saying he did anything irresponsible, just giving some background on accidental discharges. And I can speak from experience, as I have come very close to putting 5.56 and .45ACP rounds through various walls on various occasions when cleaning  function checking  fucking around with guns. The only thing that saved me was remembering one of several gun safety rules at literally the last second and stopping what I was about to do. Novices often make the mistake of "well the magazine wasn't in, that means the gun is unloaded," and even "gun experts" can forget the basics of various types of guns' operation and make faulty, i.e. potentially deadly assumptions about the loading/safety/etc status of the gun and the method of its operation.

If you ever handle firearms, whether on the job or just as a hobby, please make sure you memorize and internalize all standard gun safety rules. The same goes if you ever sell or give a gun to another person. Make sure they know them. I would list them all here but 1) I've already creeped out the gun averse portion of the population, and 2) you can google them, they are pretty standard and all of them are important. They exist for a reason, just ask Plaxico Burress!

I.E. firearm safety...

It's really not that complicated. I think a lot of the breakdowns stem from not knowing the four weapons safety rules, or people getting complacent. I come from the Marine Corps where weapons safety is paramount and there's four easy rules follow, and when followed, accidental discharges and/or negligent discharges cannot happen, and if (for some reason) one occurs nobody will be injured. Treat, Never, Keep, Keep, I've been out for over a decade and can recite the four rules verbatim.

  1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
  2. Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  3. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
  4. Keep your finger strait and off the trigger until you intend to fire.

yup. I always laugh when I read a report of someone saying "then the gun just fired." Oh, really? The gun just fired itself? No, someone pulled the trigger. Funny how I can have a loaded gun lying on a table for years and for some reason, its never "just fired." Maybe I should get it looked at.

So are you telling me doing back flips at a night club with an unsecured, loaded hand gun in your pocket is a bad idea?

Got it, good talk.

Who shot Sam Stoll?  Seems as if no further information is being released.  Does it really take four days to determine who pulled the trigger?

I don't think that answer will be coming from the athletic department.

And, if IC PD hasn't already said, then they probably won't either.
