Hey! I haven't been paying attention. Did Brian (sp?) cover the spread?
On to B1G play. Just win baby.

Yay, Iowa has gone undefeated in non-conference play. This is technically correct, the best kind of correct.
So they barely eked out a win over the worst team in the country, yeesh. Let’s hope that has more to do with them still on vacation mode and completely overlooking this game, cuz boy that was painful to watch.
It was definitely a poor showing. Inexcusable, really. No way this team is a top 25 program—period. The team will finish no better than 7th in the B1G, which would be great, but I expect a 9th or 10th place finish w/the same number of league wins. It’d be great if they stole a game or two and ended w/11 or 12 league wins. I just don’t see it with the schedule.
JR Koch was a monster
Why no Kriener?? Iowa sure couldn't protect the basket. Their freshman guard was making layups at will.
McCaffery said he was "banged up" so he limited his minutes.
Garbage Blog Aficionado
He's slow as molasses when he's healthy - he's a complete liability against a 4-guard offense.
I strongly prefer winning over losing.
He couldn't have done worse protecting the basket than the guys who played.
That's basketball. The Hawks won (even in vacation mode) so let's flush the Bryant game and move on to B1G play. A win over Purdue would go a long way towards helping us forget this one.
While I too cussed at Iowa's play during the game, it bears remembering that Garza was out and Bryant made a coaching adjustment that seemed to catch Iowa flat footed. Lots of quick Iowa shots in the 2nd half didn't help. Also, Bryant's guard play kind of reminded me of the Pitt game, small and quick. There's your template for beating Iowa when you've got no inside game.
Anybody else turn the sound off late when the commentators kept harping about the "huge" upset in the making?
Cussin' the Hawks since 1971!
Could be worse. Could have Alford as your coach and lose at home by 15 to Liberty.
I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women, and song. The other half I wasted.
Hahahaha! That’s Awesome!

Loved his comments after the game too - all blame was placed on his players not being as good as he was in middle school with basic basketball skills. Same old, same old...
Aaaand he’s gone. UCLA will start the New Year with an interim head coach.
For those who didn't see the comments:
"When you talk about pass, shoot, dribble, catch, I don't know. I guess we'll have to watch the tape and see exactly where those issues are. How we dribble, how we pass, how we catch. It's seventh-grade stuff, but we have to go back to some drills I used to do as a player in middle school," he said.
What a dick.
Oh, my choices are Keystone Light or Keystone Light? I guess I'll go with Keystone Light.
Yup - an unemployed dick; but with a nice $4.66M buyout (although there's rumor they negotiated a lower amount).
BruinsNation is finally happy = but only until the hire the next coach that is bound to be "the wrong guy".
They could have the reincarnation of John Wooden on the sidelines and I don't think they'd be truly happy.
so UCLA is the basketball version of Nebraska football?

When will schools learn that this guy is cancerous and should be avoided like the plague? You risk being eternally embarrassed by this asshat only to make the tournament and exit early.
If you want a vision of the future, imagine Kirk Ferentz clapping and chewing gum in your face - forever.
The Flames just didn't upset the Bruins. Liberty dominated them en route to a 73-58 victory in what UCLA coach [redacted] called the most disappointing loss in his 28 years of coaching.
Really? Getting beat by Liberty when your season is already down the shitter is more disappointing than... say... losing in the tourney as a 3 seed to jNW State? Get outta here. Maybe he can get a job on the University of Evansville staff with Lick. They still love [redacted] in Indiana no matter what he does.
Joe Weiskamp hasn't been great at FT shooting this year. We really need him to clean that up.
Anyone know why Kriener only played 3 minutes? Was he hurt or did he get hurt? Iowa really needs Garza and Kriener to be healthy.
McCaffery said he was "banged up" so he limited his minutes
Kreiner didn't play much because of focus and matchups; I love the kid, but his 3 minutes were awful, and Bryant was exploiting his size (taking him outside, then driving by). Cook and Baer didn't need rest because of the slow rate of play.
JRossman got it right. We did not deal well with Bryant's change of offense (run off 15 sec, spread the floor, and drive), when they were able to pull our bigs out of the lane and abuse Bohannon going to the basket. Although the announcers were unnecessarily hyperbolic, they got it right that this new scheme [instead of helter-skelter and launch, their slow-play and drive strategy] seemed to give Bryant focus and confidence.
And yes, our defensive intensity usually lasted about 20 sec/possession, but a number of their "open" 3s were from 28 feet - credit them for continuing to make them. If they continue to play like this, they are going to rise in the Kenpom ratings (although to be fair, they can hardly fall).
Nationally, a lot of favored teams struggled against cupcakes out of Christmas break: Wisconsin and UCLA lost, Maryland, Purdue, and Michigan had to work lots harder than anticipated. I'm just glad the Hawks knuckled down at the end and pulled it out; I don't know if last year's team survives this.
And a special shout out to Maishe Dailey; his defense at the end, without fouling, was crucial.
Just so it's not all Pollyanna - is anybody else concerned about TCook's free throw shooting at crunch time? He does well early in games, but his misses late in games is a disturbing trend.
Anyway, any win is better than a loss! On to Purdue
Also of note, per the last 3 box scores, Bohannon has now shot 29 three pointers since he last attempted a two point shot. That would have to be some kind of Hawkeye record if anyone kept track of that. I don't even remember Kingsbury doing something like that.
Not even close. Devan Balwinkel had 89 three point attempts his senior year without a 2 point attempt.
His junior year he attempted 5 2 pt field goals & 139 threes.
But those were the dark days of Lickliter, so yeah
Thanks for that info. There few things I remember less of than the Lickliter years.
No way this team is a top 25 program—period. The team will finish no better than 7th in the B1G, which would be great, but I expect a 9th or 10th place finish w/the same number of league wins.
