Say “cylinder” one more time, Jon! (Samuel L. Jackson voice)
Lost a few IQ points listening to the BTN announcing team tonight, but for a Hawkeye road win, it was worth it.
A magical night in Cleveland.

You could have played that drinking game in the first half with “baller,” and you would have at least lost consciousness.
What's the rule in that game when you've passed out? Do the other players continue to pour drinks into your mouth?
I believe that's SOP, yes. I also believe there's throat massaging involved to assist consumption.
And then your frat gets shut down.
Big win without Cook. (I hope he is okay. And also, maybe Iowa decided they thought they could win tonight without him, and decided to play it conservative?)
Okay, I thought Iowa needed 4 out of 5 starting with the Nebraska game. 2 for 2 so far... Now we need to win 2 out of the next 3. If we win on Saturday, I'll get greedy and ask for the 5-game win streak.
Cook warmed up before the game and he was on the bench in gear rather than street clothes, so hopefully that means his knee issue is a minor one and he'll be available to return to action soon. Iowa has a couple days off before playing OSU on Saturday afternoon; I think we'll need him for that one.
that call reversal was pivotal (and correct) - instead of jNW 2 shots and the ball, we drew another foul and... scored? either way it stemmed the tide a bit.
no more yankey Chuck's wankey
I believe you are correct. Iowa led by 5 when Garza got the rebound and the review happened. Could have been 2 shots for Wildcats and the ball. Instead Iowa ball OB and Wieskamp ended up getting fouled and making free throws.
Here's to hoping Fran employs the 'call a timeout when our opponent goes on a run' technique more often (animated screaming optional)
The animated screaming is totally not optional if it is Fran calling the timeout. He cannot help himself.
Correct. Besides, if he's calling a TO because they're sleepwalking, then they NEED to be screamed at animatedly - because it's not as if they can hear US at home.
I strongly prefer winning over losing.
1.11 points per possession against that team, on the road, is pretty impressive. They are currently ranked 28th in defensive efficiency and they sure looked like it to me. Good thing they couldn't shoot :)
To do that without Cook and without Bohannon having a big game is even more impressive.
Neil Peart stands alone
Did you guys realize how much the BTN guys LUUUUUV Fran?
Any road win is a great road win. Great job making it happen without Cook.

Except Rutgers. That one is pretty much one of those lose/lose games.
You guys suck for hating on the broadcasters. They were not bad, and they called out the officials and were shown to be right.
The commentary didn't bother me last night. But they did get a little obsessive about the "cylinder rule". Okay, to be fair, it was just Crispin who wouldn't shut up about it. I'm slowly losing my hatred for Jon, and I'm not sure how to feel about that. I really hated him (and his brother) when he was playing for PSU, but he seems to be a decent and fair commentator. I guess I'll maybe have to let go of previous feelings.
My analytical issue with Crispin is that he doesn't appear to actually watch much game film of the players. That, or he's just timid to be critical of any player. Given his demeanor, I'm leaning towards the latter. During last night's game, he mentioned having watched the Iowa State game, but he made several comments about Dailey and Moss that were quizzical at best. In particular, his constant classification of Moss as a "baller," which just sounded like lazy analysis, and then saying Dailey had a lot of talent and just needed to be consistent. That's probably a fair assessment for Moss, but I'd argue Dailey hasn't shown enough to make any statement about consistency. I got the impression Crispin knows his stuff with in-game analysis, but for a guy doing work solely for BTN, he sounded more like a national guy who just got the assignment hours prior.
All of this! Excellent.

I'd disagree completely about Dailey. I don't think he's that good, and if he were more consistent, he actually would be, but I feel like I've definnitely seen flashes.
Let me repeat that I don't think Dailey is actually good because he can't do anything consistently, HOWEVER, I see much more potential in him than I do someone like Brady Ellingson. Again, neither is good, but I'd say that Ellingson is more consistently "meh" whereas Dailey is more bad with occasional flashes of "wow!"
To wit: there were times last night and previously where Dailey looked like a legitimately good defender. He also seems to now be the 3rd PG after Bohannon and McCaffery. He's looked like a legitimate shooter at times, too, and even driven to the hoop at times. Again, he's done none of that with even a little bit of consistency, and he's more consistently NOT done it. But if he did those "flash" things consistently, I'd see a good player. I'm not sure I'd ever see anymore than a role player for someone like Ellingson no matter what they did.
I do sorta get what you're saying, though: Moss is pretty decent most of the time but disappears for long stretches. If he didn't have those disappearances, he'd be really good.
His doofus act gets a bit old but overall he doesn't bother me. After giving up my hate for Dick Vitale I really enjoy watching sports a lot more. The occasional gaffe by an announcer is a good meme every so often but overall I simply don't care much. it's very freeing.
Punting is a bold strategy, let's see if it pays off for them.

Ok, seriously I had my doubts with this game. Didn't get to see the entire game, but at one we were down in the 2nd half and I shut it off....only to tune back in a little later and got to see the last ~12 minutes of the game. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised...jNW isn't a pushover, especially in Evanston. Good win!

I'm all in on WIESUS.
I hope they find me in my home, a guitar in my hands.
You have been Rec'd.
You must've gotten a software update, huh big guy? Forming your own creative thoughts? Cuz I could've sworn you were only able to come around to reward good commenting and insight.
Has anyone seen AutoRecBot and an NS-5 robot in a room at the same time?
Fair warning to all -- keep your eyes on our beloved ARB, he most likely has massive AI abilities and was probably sent here by some jNW professor to infiltrate our minds!
I should have said, "Muscatine Musket." [punches self in head in disappointment].
Weisbound and Down
While we lost scoring with Cook out, we gained a much more disciplined interior "D". Notice the layup drills we gave up so many times to other teams were absent last night?

Agreed. Very impressive road win last night. Michigan only beat NU by 2 on the road. Road wins in the big 10 this year are going to be huge. This conference is so tough and deep.
Fran went Def Con 3 on the timeout in the 2nd half, and then Wieskamp and Garza turned the game around, while Moss was solid the whole game. The defense showed up. That's the win in a nutshell.
I honestly was just hoping to see somebody step up in the 2nd half after being down by 7. Not even expecting a win, just wanted to see someone contribute positively at this point. Well, there were two huge contributors (Wiesus and Garza) who put the team on their shoulders. That and the excellent D made all the difference.
Formerly no one but currently someone - this has not been approved by Facebook.
Still saw too many layups, though.
I wouldn't attribute Iowa's defensive results to the absence of Cook, at all.
jNW is an offensively challenged team. They are full of tweener forwards that can't shoot, or drive, or pass very well. (Our fans think Iowa doesn't have a PG. Check out Northwestern! -- They miss Bryan McIntosh desperately.) There was no Cassius Winston on this team, no Carsen Edwards, no Bryant guards, no Pitt guards -- guys that can slash, and pass or score in the lane -- the types of guys that give us fits. We matched up very well with them, and still had a significant post advantage.
Not trying to take all credit away from Iowa -- this was a good win, and there was a good defensive / rebounding effort. But they have lot to prove on that end, and there definitely is no reason to think that our defense is magically fixed by the absence of our best player (and rebounder).
Not that we expected it, but this team will not be a championship contender if only because any team with a good penetrating guard will wreak havoc on the Hawkeyes. Purdue might be an average-ish B1G team this year, but they have the one thing that will thump Iowa. Iowa's biggest defensive weaknesses are containing penetrating guards and help defense. There's no stud weak-side blocker coming over to make up for a sieve on the perimeter. I was quite happy to see Iowa buck that trend with Glynn Watson III at Nebraska.
On the other hand, if a team doesn't have that, they're going to struggle against Iowa. Iowa can body up big men just fine with Kriener, Cook, and Garza. They did that with Pardon. Further, they are good at keeping regular wing guys in check for most part.
Northwestern is the least "drive-y" team in the B1G. It was a coincidence.
Good moooornin', jNW. It's me, Joe!

My vote for that last one.

Maishe Dailey’s on-ball defense was spectacular last night and it’s something Iowa desperately needs. If he could just be a functional offensive player, he would be a great option for 10-15 minutes/game.
The charging call in the second half did nothing for his confidence, I was disappointed for him. The call was 50-50 and he came out on the wrong end but I completely think he should have taken the shot. Too bad, he flashes skills but also flashes no confidence at all.
His D is really great. Perfect Maishe Dailey Vine video (6 seconds) last night : Forces a turnover in half-court pressure, has ball in 3-on-1 fast break, and instead of making easy pass turns it back over via (albeit an iffy) offensive charging call.
His Offense is still offensive.
While I think we all agree that the charge call was questionable, I also thought from the beginning that there's no way he should have been in the position to force the foul call. Pass the ball!
I've been a staunch Dailey defender, but man it was stupid he didn't pass that ball off. He had the defender committed to him. Seriously, that's basketball 101, dude.
Dailey played pretty decent overall this game. I thought the charging call was really a foul on the jNW player (he was clearly still moving), and think Dailey gets picked on a bit by the Big 10 refs.
He had a phantom elbow call on him in the Purdue game the first minute he was on the court. He had the ball with a Purdue defender in his jersey, and when he raised his forearm about 8 inches, the Purdue defender promptly performed a double-somersault with a half-twist flop job to get an offensive call.
It appears that the refs can sense his lack of self confidence, and act according to that as much as what they see.
Weiskamp seemed to say "F it, it's time to win this" in the second half. In his interviews he has made sure to express his understanding he isn't the only option anymore, aka his HS team. Last night he seemed more aggressive and more comfortable in the role as a scorer. Cook being out?
The kid can play, 7 boards with his 19 points? As a freshman? He has the ability to be special and is going to be very fun to watch.
When we finally got to see the game (score 9-2) and they kept saying 'Cook is out tonight 'I told my wife that Wieskamp was going to take over. She didn't know him by name yet (she doesn't watch all games). But she did by the end of the night. Give her a few games to come up with a nickname. She loves yelling 'BOHANNON the BOMANNON' right now.
The only name I can come up for Wieskamp is Legend. He will be.
On other things, I kind of like Crispin as a color guy. He reminds me of Mark Ironsides' announcing style; let the players play and dont penalize a guy for playing aggressive basketball. He got a little cilynder silly last night but he was explaining correctly the rules of basketball. Personally I think Garza elbowed the jNW guy to remove his tongue from Garza's mouth. I have dreamed Dipshit's mom would hug me that close but its not appropriate on the basketball court

Joe Wieskamp is a legitimate star in the making. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a Round 1 15-25 pick in two years. He lacks the "elite athleticism" seen with a lot of prospects, but he does not want for athleticism.
I could definitely see him taking seven 3s a game, hitting 42%+ while getting a handful of rebounds, a steal and a block and close to 20ppg... Easy draft pick as a SG/SF at 6'7"
Oh, and while I'm much higher on Tyler Cook than most here, this team will be really interesting to see how it works if he and Baer are gone next year.
I'm all in on J Weezy. Love me some Sweet Baby Wiesus. Charter member of Club J-Dub.
But NFW will he be a mid 1st Rd pick in the Association.
