Great win.  Took care of business at home, and beat a team above them in the standings.

Rest Cook for the next 2, hopefully Garza is close to 100%, and get more wins.

That WAS fun! It’s amazing how fun a game can be when the Hawks clamp down on defense and limit the turnovers for an entire half of play. OSU got some lucky buckets at the end and Iowa missed several FTs to keep it at a 10-point win instead of the 20-point win it looked to be.

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women, and song. The other half I wasted.

This was fun.  Well played all around game, with some nice contributions from the bench.  Somebody should double check my math, but if they keep winning they should probably earn a high seed in the tournament and we dance like JCVD.

He only had 9 points, but we got a beautiful glimpse today--especially in the second half--of what Isaiah Moss can be: a lithe player with a game that slides and slivers its way to open looks and opportune baskets. That old bugaboo of inconsistency can easily rear its head again, but for today, I'm going to enjoy the kind of game I saw from a player with so much potential.

A magical night in Cleveland.

I absolutely thought we were a complete fluke with the start we had to the big ten slate. I'm so happy I'm wrong and know nothing.

I was impressed by the defense in the second half. Glad to see what appears to be a quality win at home. Hope they can keep things rolling and Cook is alright.

I also have a non-game related question: Are their "sister sites" to GIA? I assume that Roar Lions Roar for Penn State and Eleven Warriors for OSU have some sort of affiliation to this as they share the same formatting and such. Just wondering if there are others and what the whole back story is.

That picture of Kriener.  Man.  Hilarious.

OSU shot 12/34 on two point attempts - an absolutely terrible percentage.  We blocked 6 shots but only allowed them to take 11 FTs.  Great job of protecting the rim without fouling.

42 points for our trio of bigs.  2 points for Big Wesson.

Let's hope Cook isn't out for long because this looks like a tourney team to me.

Do I recall him blowing a kiss to the TV camera or was it a wink?

AP

At first I thought he blew a kiss to a tOSU heckler (a la Reggie to Spike Lee at The Garden) but before the commercial they showed that he did like a hand thing to his one eye which became the hand thing he's doing in the photo, and I think he was winking with the other eye, directly into the camera.

Matt Bohannon played at UNI.

With limited depth at forward injuries to either Cook or Garza could make it tough to be competitive going forward. Hopefully Cook can get back to 100% soon.

Also that defense that iowa played was impressive. Constant active hands and not giving easy layups or open 3s was great to see. Where has this defense come from? I like how they have been mixing up where they bring the pressure on the halfcourt trap. Wieskamp has a really good feel for how to keep the offense off balance with where he applies the pressure.

3-3 in B1G play, 14-3 overall. It's getting to be the point of the season where your record starts to matter. That's a good record. Not a lot of power teams that have 3 or less wins at this point.

AP

If not for Bethune Cookman, Nebraska football would have 3 or less wins at this point...

Oof, what a stupid typo. Losses, not wins. Stupid, MdH.

This current stretch is critical. Two more wins against PSU and Illinois and it will set the team up nicely for a NCAA tourney bid. After that, they’ll need to play very well in order to finish better than 6-6 to end the year. Keep plugging away, fellas!

For those :ahem, Ricky: who wonder what "Fran's offense" is clearly dumping into Cook, Garza, and Kreiner and getting the other team in fouls. The entry passes are getting better and Cook and Garza are both getting better at getting position (Garza excellent, Cook good). then, swinging it around and out for open 3s from Bohannon, Moss, Weiskamp and Dailey.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but if Weiskamp keeps this up and slowly improves, if he's got a 35" vertical, he could be a first rounder this year. Yikes. Legit stud.

Offensive rebounds at size advantage is also an important part of our offense. We destroyed OSU on the boards tonight. So many second and third chances.

AP

Well, the box score shows Iowa with 37 rebounds and OSU with....37 rebounds.  Iowa with 9 offensive rebounds and OSU with....12 offensive rebounds.  So, maybe not?

AP
DodgerHawki's picture

Rebounding was a push. Iowa got 27% of its own misses, while OSU gathered 30% of its own misses. Iowa won by getting to the line more and by holding OSU to an abysmal 12-34 on 2-point shots. Combination of good defense (6 blocks) and some fortune, OSU missed some close-in shots it should have made. That is the lowest percentage any Iowa opponent has shot on 2-pointers all year.

Welp. Guess I saw what I wanted to see.

This clearly stuck in your craw.

That appeared to be the offense today, and that’s great. The entry passes were terrible in the first half but much better in the second. Hope they keep it up.

Funny how Carver isn’t a garbage arena when the team actually plays well, isn’t it? Funny how that works.

The arena and atmosphere is lacking, but the fan base has been conditioned to not pay attention. In the last 20 years of Iowa hoops, they have made the NCAA tournament 6 times. That is a generation fo fans who have been subjected to a lot of bad basketball. At this point Iowa is going to need to put some good years of winning together to get the fans back.

AP
Ricky D's Triple Double's picture

This. And I think it would be interesting to trace where the apathetic conditioning started. To say Lickliter is too obvious. [REDACTED] is also not where the seed germinated, IMO. I think the disgruntlement with Tom Davis’ recruiting followed by his unceremonious lame-duck ousting is where this all started. The ensuing years and coaches just compounded it.

A magical night in Cleveland.

I was a huge Iowa B-ball fan in the 90s and was a U of I freshman in 2000.  [REDACTED]'s second season had good interest and a good atmosphere, especially pre-Luke Recker's injury (as an aside, Dean Oliver was a absolute privilege to watch that year; truely a great college point guard).  When they melted down his third year despite having very solid talent was where it really started to build.  The next two seasons after that the atmosphere was very blah and the Pierre Pierce incidents drove a lot of fans away.  It took a team loaded with Iowa boys who lost <10 games to get fans to the arena while [REDACTED] was there and the second NW State won they were all gone again.  Personally, I felt the same way.  I am not sure when the first seeds were planted (certainly the Davis ousting was one), but this is [REDACTED]'s ugly baby (perhaps it is some kind of demon now) and sustained success is the only thing that is going to kill it.  I hope Fran is up to the task!

It is so nice to see good free throw shooting at the end of games.  We had years of making 1 of 2 or miss the front of a 1 and 1 down the stretch but this batch of players has generally been really good at making free throws in the last few minutes to ice a game.

Fun Fact:

Both this season and last Iowa has had 4 players (Cook, Garza, Wieskamp, and Bohannon this season) averaging double digit points, you'd have to go back to the '04-'05 season for the last time Iowa had 4 players do the same. The last Iowa team to have 5 players average double digit points was the '94-'95 team. Isaiah Moss is sitting at 9.3 ppg this season, he averaged 11.1 ppg last season.

Fun game to watch and good to see Fran and Co. get a solid win over a good OSU team.

Weiskamp is the game changer for Iowa, yet no one mentioned his name in comments aboe.  Review the away from the ball things that he does on both defense and offense that keeps Iowa in games.  His behaviors spark the others to do the same.  He is unselfish and ALWAYS doing little things that help a team win.  This is the single component that has been absent in years past.  Baer did some of this but without the intelligence of a Weiskamp.  Weiskamp understands the game. Having a coach on the floor is invaluable.

Go Hawks..

Agreed.

Baer is good in the "overachiever" way. Weiskamp is good in the "man, sometimes this is just too easy" way.

Baer didn't have the athleticism nor the skill of Weiskamp either. I wouldn't be surprised if, despite being a 5th syear senior and a true freshman, if they stood next to each other, that Weiskamp were thicker and stronger.

Maybe not the best place for a new comment.   But, I'm really high on 3 guys.  In no p order:

Ryan:  His head is screwed on tight & his stroke is true.  You know all the rest.

Joe:  Ready for a bigger role.  Soon to be LLegend ....

Jack:  Nothing to add this year.  The rest is up to him.

Just to clarify, you're high on 3 guys from this team, the 3rd of which is redshirting this year?

The only negative I have on this game is that on the bottom of the screen scroll, where the BTN lists the standings for the league, they had Iowa at 12-4 with a 2-3 record (during this game) in the BIG.  I was racking my brain trying to figure out where the 4th loss came from, then I realized that the BTN made a typo. For some reason, this slight really stuck in my craw and I was fuming about it most of the game.

Other than that, great game by the Hawks and a great win.  I would like to see the team play like this against MSU, Michigan, Purdue, Maryland, etc.  It seems that during the games against the league's best teams, Iowa folds.  Let's hope that changes the rest of the season.

It's only Jan. 12 and we have already equaled last year's win total (14).

And we're back in the AP at No. 23 and RPI now stands at No. 32.

Also my first-ever post here.

Just saying.
