I'm interested to see what happens at LB.  I have a hunch Amani Jones wins his job back.

Where he shall stay for up to an entire half. He will then make a mistake that every linebacker makes from time-to-time and will be a special teams beast for the next 12 games.

I hate to have to point this out about a young man giving his all for our beloved Hawkeyes, but this is not at all about the coaches pulling him too early. Amani Jones was so spectacularly bad, so amazingly out of position on every play, so debilitating as the quarterback of the defense that it was completely correct that two fill-in walk-ons took the rest of the Mike snaps last year after he was deservedly pulled so early. Amani Jones is great on special teams, he can stay there and never see the field on defense again and it’s better for Iowa Football.

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women, and song. The other half I wasted.

He was bad, to be sure, but haven't we seen similarly bad halves from other linebackers? I don't want to name names, but I think we all know a few.

If it was just a half he would have made it back on the field at some point in the season. The coaches had to of seen something more.

I think it depends on whether the coaches want to find a replacement at the “star” position, or revert back to the old 4-3. If it’s the latter, then there’s at least a chance for Jones, if the former, no way.

I say put Jones at FB and let him truck some fools

This was a little more sobering than I was expecting.  The schedule is tough.  I trust Parker to piece the defense together, but any issues could be a real problem.

Tom Kakert from Hawkeye Report said that Davion Nixon was back in school and participating in football. I actually thing we could be better at DT with Lattimore and Nixon plugging up the middle

I think it would be huge to have Nixon, no pun intended.

If Nixon is still around (and the second hand reports seem to suggest he is), I think he has to start at DT.  Overall, I think that makes for a formidable front 4. I think the bigger question is if we can get 6 or so.

That's your head-coach-in-waiting you're talking about!  Show him the respect he deserves for being born the son of the current HC!

I strongly prefer winning over losing.

I really, really hope so. But I am not counting on him at all until he actually takes the field in a real game

With the graduation of two all-world tight ends the receivers need to step up.  Smith and Smith-Marsette need to be the best tandem Iowa has fielded in awhile.  I think the raw material is there for that to happen.  Also at least one RB, either through better health or someone emerging, needs to be a bit of a difference maker.  Iowa had 3 RBs last year and all were mostly average, with Sargent probably showing the most.  Brian's offense in year 3 needs to keep improving if Iowa is to surprise anyone.

Is this going to be a new weekly segment? Troubling Tuesday?

To sum up. One of our best coaches is gone and we're replacing him with a backup. We have no TEs and our WRs drop the ball. We lost all of our D- line starters. Our LBs lose their best guy who will be replaced by a guy that was benched early in his first game. Our punting was terrible and our grad transfer punter is... ok?

I suppose this sets our expectations low which is when our teams perform the best. Carry on then!

Best time for a Ferentz win your first 7 games, starting 4-0 in the B1G, convince everyone you've still got it, then only beat Nebraska the rest of the way (to satisfy Iowans' inferiority complex) and lose all the others by fewer than 10 points.

meh

It's less of an "inferiority complex" and more of a "Cornhusker fans are dickbags" thing.

WIn or lose I’m still certain Nebraska is inferior to Iowa. I’ve been to Nebraska.

I think one of the true freshmen TEs gets a good shot at significant playing time this year. The TE group probably won't be the best in the nation this year but they haven't had any opportunities to show how good or bad they are until now.

I'm not worried about the DL as much if Nixon is on the team. AJE was one of the best DEs in the conference last year with half the snaps the rest of the top DEs got. He was getting extra attention every snap he was on the field and still got in the backfield. He does need to improve his run support this year.

I am worried about the RB position though. Somebody needs to separate themselves as the go to back. Personally I'd like to see Tyler Goodson get a shot at competing from day one.

If there's one thing that we have learned about Iowa football spring practice in the past, it's that we don't really know who they are until September.

Well that, and that some back-up WR will dazzle us with his performance and leave fans salivating at what he’ll do in the fall, only for him to fail to ever record a single catch. I’m going with Samson Evans

There are players who didn't start or did ocassionally play a lot that can do the job.  We all know AJE and can't wait to see what he does on every down snaps.  Chauncey Golston always seemed to be around the ball and big plays, which is a good sign.  Not even worried about tight ends because even when BF had the two best in the country--we didn't throw to them and still won some games (save jNW which still burns my britches).

I only worry about the relatives of players who spout off on twitter and make KF mad.

The offensive challenges that persisted last year probably get worse as all three of Stanley’s top options won’t be there this fall.  Hope AJ and the boys can score us 10-14 points a game, because this might be a very challenging season.

I gotta admit, the basketball team did a pretty good job of helping me forget about all the early departures and losing Morgan. Man this article is a snap back to reality.

Im less worried than most. Iowa has a long history of reloading at the D-Line, Tight End and Safety positions.

D-Line and Safety have known talented players, next year is just a matter of getting them more experience, and Tight End at Iowa is as close to a sure thing as you can get in college sports. When was the last time Iowa didnt find a starting TE that was bad? Went from Moeaki to the Polish Hat to Kettel to Hock & Fant. its almost been a damn decade since Iowa hasnt had a NFL level TE somewhere on the team, let alone a talented one.

Quick Question. When was the last time Iowa did not have an NFL level TE starting for them? was it only for one year?

I think the answer in the Ferentz era is “never”. Probably our worst year was when HKC was the #1 TE? And he was definitely NFL caliber.

Wasn't the Polish Hat around then? He definitely started each game in 2012, maybe a few in 2011 too...

AP
HoyaGoon's picture

He would have been a true freshman in 2011 and I really don't think he started any that year. I guess I didn't realize the Hat started every game in 2012. To be fair, though, neither did Greg Davis

He was a true frosh in 2010 (saw action in all 13 games) and started five games in 2011 according to his bio (just looked out of curiosity).

All of this being said: I am on board to pretend 2012 never happened.

Disappointed to be 7-5.

Does it matter?  It's all about the "competitiveness" of the team - and oh yeah, coaching incentives too.

We may be lucky to do better than 7-5, but there’s no way KF misses out on locking in that buyout amount that 7 wins gets him

They should be pretty salty on defense, lost a lot of experience but some very talented players still around. As usual, offense is the big concern, especially losing the team's three best pass catchers. Getting more big plays out of the RBs would help make up for that, Sargent was really coming on at the end.

AP
Gnayden Fry's picture

Sargeant was coming on at the end, and my impression is that Godson will be an instant contributor. I have hope for a Daniel's and Akrum like year or 2 with those guys.

I'll go out on a limb and say the offense will be fine next year.  Smith made huge improvements at WR last year, and will step up and be a core part of the offense.  Does anyone really think TE will not contribute heavily to the O?  It will.  We get our QB and good running game back, to boot.  This offense will be solid, if not great (not).

My concern is the pass rush from the DL.  AJE will be double (heck triple some times)-teamed at all times, so someone else will have to step it up in the rush, or there could be some ugly-assed (pretty-assed if we win) scores next year.

Formerly no one but currently someone - this has not been approved by Facebook.

I'd be shocked if we didn't see Drew Cook become a contributor in some fashion.  Wieting is a great TE as a blocker but maybe lacks in catching ability, Beyer is pretty much untested (aside from punt touching SNAFU...sorry to bring it up again).  Just a gut feeling, but seems to me like Cook could figure in nicely, good athlete also.
