Hey, it's the return of Iowa basketball! Or at least the return of a basketball-like substance. Iowa opens 2019-20 action with an exhibition game against the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders. And, no, I didn't make up any of that. Lindsey Wilson is an NAIA team; they went 16-15 last year. The last time they played a D1 team was an exhibition with Western Kentucky in 2015-16; they lost 84-71. The Blue Raiders don't have much size; they have just one starter over 6'4" (6'8" forward Matthew Eldridge), so this ought to be a game where Iowa pounds the ball down low to make use of their size.
But we don't really need much analysis for an exhibition game against an NAIA team -- if Iowa doesn't win this game handily, it probably means there's a LOT to be worried about this season. This game is more interesting for giving us a few glimpses of new faces (or old faces in new roles), like:
- What do Joe Wieskamp and Luka Garza look like as Iowa's main options on offense?
- What do Jack Nunge and C.J. Fredrick look like after redshirting last season?
- What can grad transfer Bakari Evelyn add to the mix?
- What can newcomers Joe Toussaint and Patrick McCaffery add as freshmen?
Cordell Pemsl is the only Iowa player who won't be available for this game, as he serves the first game of his two-game suspension after an offseason OWI arrest. Jordan Bohannon is available and is expected to see the court, albeit in limited minutes as he continues to recover from offseason hip surgery.
This game is only available on BTN+ (BTN's pay-streaming service), but thankfully that won't be the norm for Iowa this year. Only one other non-conference game (Oral Roberts on 11/15) is currently slated to be on BTN+; all other games are set to air on BTN, FS1, or an ESPN network.
The usual rules apply.
