After a fairly sleepy week of action in the college basketball world (hey, it was Christmas), there wasn't too much movement in the new weekly polls. Iowa did manage to consolidate their position in the rankings, though, sliding up a few spots from #25 to #23 in the AP Poll and cracking the Coaches Poll for the first time all season, at #25.
New AP Poll:
|13||San Diego State||13-0||780|
The big riser in the AP Poll this week was West Virginia, who jumped six spots to #16 after their impressive neutral court win over Ohio State on Sunday. Losses by Ohio State (who fell three spots to #5) and Louisville (who fell four spots to #7) led to a reshuffling of the Top 5, with Duke, Kansas, and Oregon moving up to fill in the 2-4 spots.
New Coaches Poll:
|12||San Diego State||13-0||382|
Welcome to the Coaches Poll for the first time all season, Iowa.
The Coaches Poll has a slightly different Top 5, with Baylor and Oregon flipping spots at #4 and #6. Ohio State (down three spots to #5) and Louisville (down four spots to #8) took a tumble, but the big dropper in the Coaches Poll was Virginia, who fell six spots to #19. (Apparently Coaches Poll voters just noticed they lost to South Carolina last Sunday?) The big risers were Kentucky (up five to #14) and West Virginia (up six to #17).
It's nice to see Iowa ranked in the Top 25 and it's a deserving placement after the strong work Iowa hoops has done over the last month. Like we said last week, a spot in the Top 25 was not really on our radar earlier in the year. But this team has really done an impressive job of growing and improving over the course of the season. To stay ranked next week, though, Iowa's going to have to come up with another big performance -- their next game is against #21 Penn State on a neutral court (The Palestra in Philadelphia) on Saturday (1 PM CT, BTN). Let's see what you can do, Hawkeyes.
