Surprising news this morning for Iowa's starting defense, courtesy of Chad Leistikow:
Look for Iowa true freshman CB Riley Moss to get his first career start today in place of Michael Ojemudia; on the other side, it looks like true freshman CB Julius Brents will start in place of Matt Hankins.— Chad Leistikow (@ChadLeistikow) October 6, 2018
We knew Hankins has been dealing with some injury concerns (he was unable to finish the Wisconsin game; Brents finished the game in his place), so it's not a complete shock to see him out for this game. But we had no idea Ojemudia could miss this start as well, or why he's out. In their place we have two true freshmen making their first career starts, Julius Brents and Riley Moss.
This certainly adds an interesting -- and unwelcome -- wrinkle to today's game, since wide receiver is Minnesota's strongest position unit on offense and now those receivers will be defended by two players with very limited experience. That said, if there's any position we're included to be a little more confident in a true freshman, it's probably at cornerback, where we've seen young players do well before and because of the Phil Parker factor. In Phil We Trust, right?
Iowa-Minnesota kicks off at 2:30 PM CT today on BTN.
