'Tis the season for... kickoff time announcements? Hey, it's summer -- pickings are slim, alright? Kickoff times for several of Iowa's 2019 football games -- over half of the regular season, in fact -- were announced today, which you can see below:

A few thoughts:

  • Did you miss 11 AM kickoffs? They're back in a big way so far in 2019, with four scheduled 11 AM kickoffs already on the docket -- against Rutgers in Iowa City, at Michigan on 10/5, for Homecoming against Purdue on 10/19, and at Northwestern on 10/26. That equals the number of 11 AM kickoffs that Iowa had all of last season -- and one of those was the Outback Bowl.
  • Speaking of Homecoming -- Iowa is currently set to play in three Homecoming games this fall. Iowa's own Homecoming is against Purdue on 10/19 and they'll be the Homecoming opponent for Michigan (10/5) and Northwestern (10/26). Beating Michigan and Northwestern on the road is always a satisfying experience, but being able to spoil their Homecomings would be a nice cherry on top. (Conversely, it would add a dash of further annoyance if Purdue is able to win their third straight game over Iowa this fall and spoil Iowa's Homecoming in the process.)
  • We know there will be at least one evening kickoff at home -- surprisingly, Iowa's season opener against Miami (OH), which is set to get underway at 6:30 PM. I don't think that will be the only night game for Iowa in 2019 (that Penn State game on 10/12 looks like a strong possibility), but we likely won't know about any additional night games until fall.
  • Iowa-Iowa State is set for a 3 PM start on FS1. Given the hype that game has already been receiving, I have to admit I'm a little surprise that game didn't receive a more high profile time slot or get placed on a bigger network (like FOX proper).
  • In fact, Iowa's first three games are all set to be on FS1. Iowa had no games on FS1 last year (though there were four games broadcast by FOX proper) and two on FS1 in 2017 (Minnesota, Nebraska). Hope you like lots of commercials! Fox hasn't released any information about their announcer lineups for 2019, although their top announcing team will remain Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they won't be heading to Iowa City to call the games against Miami (OH) or Rutgers. That could mean a few rounds of The Tim Brando Experience, although frankly Iowa-Miami (OH) and Iowa-Rutgers may not even warrant that.
  • Iowa-Nebraska's annual Black Friday clash has been relegated to a 1:30 PM start on BTN. Is this the inevitable result of Nebraska's continued slide into irrelevance? Who can say. (Yes.) Although Scott Dochterman has an alternative argument over at The Athletic ($) -- that it's actually a sign of respect of sorts for the game to be on BTN because the network placed this game high on its priority list; maybe so, but there's certainly less prestige (and viewership) associated with a game on BTN (or FS1) versus a game on ABC or FOX (or ESPN).

All told, seven of Iowa's 12 regular season games now have an announced kickoff time for next fall. Four games also have TV broadcast information set. Odds are that we won't get further kickoff or TV broadcast time until next fall, when the season is underway. Only a few more months to go 'til then...
