This certainly isn't the sort of news we wanted to see as Iowa begins its bye week:
Iowa AD Gary Barta has prostate cancer, will take leave of absence https://t.co/h5BGALZwad

We've certainly had our differences with Gary Barta over the years at both Black Heart Gold Pants and Go Iowa Awesome (his tenure at Iowa actually started right around the same that we started blogging in earnest about Iowa, coincidentally). We've disagreed with him about lots of things, ranging from hiring decisions to corporate sponsorship decisions to scheduling, as well as more serious matters, like the Jane Meyer and Tracy Griesbaum situations. But all of our criticisms and complaints have been related to professional matters concerning his performance as Iowa's athletic director; we've certainly never wished ill will on him personally or his family.
So yeah: fuck cancer. Give it hell, Gary. The good news is that Barta is right next to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and he should be able to receive excellent care in this battle. Our thoughts go out to Barta and his family, friends, and colleagues during this time. We're all rooting for you to kick cancer's ass.
