On Sunday the Iowa women's basketball team won their first Big Ten Tournament title since 2001 and their first Big Ten title of any kind since 2008. On Monday Iowa achieved another notable feat: their highest AP Poll ranking in over 20 years. Fresh off their impressive win over then-#8 Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament final, Iowa moved up in the rankings from #10 to #8.
Iowa was ranked #10 in the AP poll earlier in the season, but they haven't been ranked higher than that -- or had a single-digit ranking -- since 1997, when they began the year at #6 in the rankings. It's a deservedly high ranking for the high-flying Hawkeyes -- they've won five in a row after yesterday's win and 10 of their last 11 games. In fact, since opening the year at 2-2 in the Big Ten, Iowa has been on a tear, going 15-2 over the last two months.
A week ago, the NCAA revealed their Top 16 teams at that point; Iowa was #8 in those rankings, too, and slotted as a 2-seed. Since then, Iowa has rattled off three straight wins, including another victory over Maryland, one of their biggest challengers for a 2-seed. Several of the teams behind them in those rankings have also lost, so there's little reason to think that Iowa won't be a 2-seed when the brackets are revealed a week from today. We'll have to wait until then for the official confirmation, though.
In the meantime, though, these are giddy times for Lisa Bluder & Co., so let's soak it up.
