Phenom Spencer Lee made his collegiate debut at the UNI Open last month, torching the overmatched field there on his way to a championship at 125 lbs. He got off to a rip-roaring start at the Midlands Championships last weekend with two technical falls and a pin before getting upset in the semifinals. But he did all that while wrestling "unattached," meaning that he was competing while not officially representing Iowa (thus preserving his ability to redshirt). Earlier this week Iowa announced that he wouldn't be using that redshirt this year, which made But tonight a night of a lot of firsts for Spencer Lee:
- His first match in an Iowa singlet
- His first match on home turf at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
- And, when he was done, his first pin in Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Lee didn't waste any time in dispatching his foe, Michigan State's Rayvon Foley, using slickly taking Foley down straight to his back shortly after 30 seconds into the match. A few seconds and a little re-positioning later and he had Foley's shoulders on the mat -- BAM. Total time of fall: 46 seconds. Lee didn't wrestle very long in his official debut -- but I don't think the fans at CHA minded too much:
Let this be a lesson to Iowa fans, though: be sure to get to your seats early at home dual meets. If you blink, you just might miss Spencer Lee destroying someone in under a minute.
EDIT: Some more video (and commentary from Lee himself) here:
Welcome to CHA, Spencer. Judging by the crowd reaction tonight, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
