Aaaand... we're back! After a three week layoff, Iowa wrestling returns to action this weekend with their annual pilgrimage to Illinois for the Midlands Championships, one of the biggest and best in-season college tournaments outside the NCAA Tournament. For years the event was held on Northwestern's campus in Evanston, but the last few years it's been at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates (which, like Evanston, is near Chicago).

Iowa is sending its full starting lineup, as well as several back-ups and a few guys currently redshirting. They're heavy favorites to repeat as champions for a sixth straight year -- they have a wrestler seeded second or better in eight of ten weights. If seeds hold to form, they ought to cruise to another Midlands crown. Here's what's on top in Session I:

(numbers represent seeds, not national ranking)

125: #1 Spencer Lee vs UN Malik Heinselman (Ohio State -- unattached)
125: UN Perez Perez vs #3 Ryan Millhof (Arizona State) OR UN Justin Cardani (Illinois -- unattached)
133: #2 Austin DeSanto vs UN Honor Nguyen (SIU-Edwardsville -- unattached)
133: UN Paul Glynn vs #8 Derek Spann (Buffalo)
141: #2 Max Murin vs UN Trevor Tarsi (Harvard) OR UN James Pawelski (Brown)
141: #4 Vince Turk vs UN Pat D'Arcy (unattached) OR UN Danny Bertoni (Maryland)
141: #11 Carter Happel vs UN Chad Hay (Wildcat Wrestling Club)
141: UN Justin Stickley vs #9 Nathan Boston (Campbell) OR UN Josh Breeding (Princeton)
149: #5 Pat Lugo vs UN Nicholas Villarreal (Arizona State)

157: #2 Kaleb Young vs UN Elijah Davis (Purdue)
157: #12 Jeren Glosser vs UN Jacob Wright (Fresno State)
157: UN Keegan Shaw vs UN Anders Lantz (Wisconsin)
165: #2 Alex Marinelli vs UN Eric Young (Northwestern) OR UN Cael McCormick (Army)
165: UN Jeremiah Moody vs UN Emil Soehnlen (Purdue -- unattached)
174: #8 Mitch Bowman vs Devon Sievers (South Dakota)
184: #2 Cash Wilcke vs UN Peter Acciardi (Buffalo -- unattached)
197: #2 Jacob Warner vs UN Sam Schuler (Buffalo)
197: UN Connor Corbin vs #1 Patrick Brucki (Princeton) OR UN Max Ihry (Northern Illinois)
285: #1 Sam Stoll vs UN Izaak Shedenhelm (UNI)
285: #11 Tony Cassioppi vs UN Ben Goldin (Penn)
285: UN Aaron Costello vs UN Antonio Pelusi (Franklin & Marshall)

Full bracket available here

There will be 8 mats in action during Session I. Your best bet for determining mat assignments is either the dashboard for the Midlands event at Trackwrestling or the Twitter feeds listed above. I'll try to provide updates in the comments here as well.

I'm putting the over-under on Iowa champs at 3.5. Obviously they have an excellent shot at 125. I think they have pretty good chances at 141, 165, 197, and 285, as well as a decent chance at 184.

I'll post updates and results in the comments, but feel free to join in as well!

The usual rules apply.
