Iowa placed 10 wrestlers in the semis at Midlands -- and saw seven of those wrestlers advance to the finals. The semifinal round got off to a down note when we discovered that Spencer Lee was going to medical forfeit out of the tournament. Iowa's write-up says that "Spencer Lee's medical forfeit was a Coaches Decision." Two other Iowa wrestlers lost their semifinals -- Vince Turk dropped a narrow 3-1 decision to top seed Austin O'Connor in sudden victory at 149 lbs, while Jacob Warner gave up a late takedown to lose a tight 7-6 decision to #5 seed Jay Aiello at 197 lbs.

Fortunately, Iowa's other semifinalists all managed to take care of business. Austin DeSanto cruised to a workmanlike 10-4 decision at 133 lbs. Max Murin was able to grind out a 4-0 decision win at 141 lbs. Pat Lugo edged #3 seed Max Thomsen 3-2 at 149 lbs. Kaleb Young gave up an early takedown but fought back to get his semifinal to overtime, where he came out on top of a wild scramble with the match-winning score -- a pin, no less. Alex Marinelli used a handful of takedowns and a mountain of riding time to get a pretty easy 8-3 win. Abe Assad provided the shock result of the round by pinning #7 seed Zach Braunagel in the first period. And Tony Cassioppi fell behind 4-1 to #5 seed Carter Isley but roared back to win 11-5.
