A vagabond now on the East Coast, I appreciate this site, providing quality Iowa insight, humor, and lack of f-bombs.

  • SPORTS MOMENT: Live: Seeing a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th, first time at Fenway Pk in the early '00s.
Not best, but live: Seeing Iowa lead but lose to Mich. in AA in '97; Seeing Iowa lose to NW on the perfect onside kick in '05.

This may be unpopular, but I severely dislike the NFL Combine.  I stayed at a hotel in downtown Indy 10 years ago for work that happened to host the Combine guests.  The $$$$ thrown around for that week (smoke machines in the lobby, special reflective "NFL Combine" lighting on the floor, etc.) along with seeing ultra stressed out OL in sweatpants in the elevator concerned about their lifting #s for their future earning potential -- it all seemed surreal and wasteful.

A "Rocky IV"-esque evaluation of chopping wood, lifting heavy beams, and running up snowy, wooded hills would suffice.

This team reminds me of one of the early 90s Dr. Tom teams.  Partly because there is a dominant #55 on the team (shout out to Acie Earl), partly because the team has been hovering between #15-25 in the polls with a lot of solid Big 10 wins.

Will we play Duke in the 2nd Round of the Tournament?  That would be poetic.

Ron Harper, Jr must eat pre-game Maid-Rites.  Loves it in Iowa.  Left with the L, though.  Upward in the polls for next week with no game over the weekend.

That '87 game at Purdue was on YouTube.  Mackey Arena was FROTHING.  Vintage Gene Keady.  Dick Vitale calling the game, stating Iowa could not win with the extremely raucous crowd that night and a 5-10 pt Purdue lead, but Iowa prevailed.

Penn St also wore uniforms w/pink numbers against Mich at Crisler Arena the same day. I thought it was weird.  It's not yet Valentine's Day.  This makes sense

Thank you GIA staff for the outstanding articles.  Very moving words today.  A reflective day, indeed.

I have had the mental pictures of Nick Bell running over, around, and through the 1990 Illini -- with a beaming Hayden on the sidelines.

RIP Hayden.

Imagine Iowa being 1-15 in their last 16 against Iowa St.  Nope...can't do it.

It does "feel" like Iowa is 1-15 lately against Wisc., though.  Sigh.

Can 6-6 Mich State and 5-7 Nebraska play each other in the Little Caesar's Bowl in Detroit?  A great Delany-going-away gift.

On a more serious note, RIP Charles Rogers.  Sad that he had a rough life after starring at MSU and not living up to his potential with the Lions.

A good day to fry up some bacon, regardless

Iowa will attempt a half-back pass tomorrow.

MN will have a key drop of a sure Stanley Interception that influences the final score.

27-20 Iowa.

That Manti Teo re-tweet was a great "burn."

Sign Morgan Freeman up now as Lovie for the 2020 feature film about the 2019 Illinois football team, "Ease the Cham-pain"

Wis 20 -- Iowa 13.

No way Iowa loses to Minn. though.  I have $5 that says Fleck is going to be courted, then go to Florida State.  Think about it: "Fleck State University."  He will oar over from the Land of 10,000 Lakes to the FL Gulf Coast (and gator-dwelling ponds).

Also Good:  Several hard, clean hits by the defense

Also Bad:  Penalty for an illegal block on a Goodson 30-yard run

Also Ugly: The hot-headed 15-yard penalty on Brian F.  /  Northwestern's quarterbacking.  Not Brett Basanez bullets, for sure.

Good--The Uniforms

Bad--Weak offensive performance.  Reminded me of 2016 home loss to WI where one thought that it would be a less than 10 point loss, but Iowa would not win.  PSU utilized their Noah (Cain) better than IA did in big games with Noah (Fant).

Ugly--Iowa has not beaten PSU post-2011 Sandusky scandal.  Disheartening.

My younger self recalls a ranked Iowa team losing to a seemingly weak Colorado team in the late 80s, a disappointing home loss for Fry.

The game was not televised.  Of course at that time, one had to wait for the Denny Frary weather forecast to conclude to get to the 2 minutes of field-level, end zone corner highlights.  Not ideal.

I appreciate the column.  I am also curious how Bobby prepares for an Iowa-Mich clash.

Does he hang out in front of The Brown Jug bar/grill in Ann Arbor, nervously eating corn on the cob, then washes it down with a Bell's?

Does he fire up a replay of the 2003 Iowa-Mich game, pen and notebook in hand, and wait for the Glorious Lloyd Carr Punting Experiment to begin?

Similar upbringing, few years later.  First loss I remember to ISU was checking the scoreboard in '98 on a warm September Saturday and being very surprised.  Thought, "Hayden has lost a step."

I thought no way possible Iowa could blow a big lead after plowing them (2002), but sadly McCarney used up a "HE'S ON FIRE" NBA Jam cheat code with Seneca Wallace in the 2nd half.
