We Want Dook? Iowa Basketball Is Getting Duke, In The Jimmy V Classic

Iowa men's basketball got good news earlier this week when Kris Murray announced his decision to remove himself from NBA Draft consideration and return to Iowa for the 2022-23 season. And now we know that the Kris-led Hawkeyes will be playing at least one high-profile game this winter:

WE WANT DOOK?!

Well, we're getting Duke. The Coach K-less Duke, that is.

Iowa is slated to take on Duke in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on December 6th. Duke went 32-7 last season and won the ACC regular season title en route to a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the Final Four before losing to hated rival North Carolina (womp womp).

The Duke team that suits up against Iowa at the Jimmy V Classic will look very different than that squad, though. They'll have a new coach for starters -- former Duke player and coach Jon Scheyer is replacing Mike Krzyzewski as the head man. And they'll have a whole lot of new players -- as many as five Duke players could get selected in the 2022 NBA Draft, including Paolo Banchero, Wendell Moore Jr, Trevor Keels, AJ Griffin, and Mark Williams. Fear not, though, Duke's cupboard will not be barren when they play Iowa. Their incoming recruiting class includes five players ranked in ESPN's Top 50 for 2022, including the two top-ranked prospects, C Dereck Lively and SF Dariq Whitehead, and the #7 overall prospect, C Kyle Filipowski. And that doesn't even include Class of 2023 guard Tyrese Proctor, a five-star prospect from Australia who's reclassifying into the 2022 class to play next season.

Iowa has a crisp, uh, 1-7 record all-time against the Blue Devils; their only victory was an 81-71 neutral site win (at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii!) in 1994. Iowa and Duke were familiar foes in the Dr. Tom days of the early 90s; they placed each other in six consecutive seasons, from 1990-91 through 1995-96. Duke won five of those six clashes, but there were a few close calls among the losses, including a 3-point loss in 1993 and a 7-point loss in 1995.

It's been a while since Iowa faced Duke, though; the last encounter came in 2001, as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Duke routed Iowa there, 80-62. (Reminder: Iowa will be facing Duke in the Jimmy V Classic, not the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which means Iowa should have another ACC opponent on the non-conference slate as well next season.) 21 years later, Iowa will finally get another crack at the Dukies.

It seems very fitting for Iowa to finally play in the Jimmy V Classic, too. It began in 1995, but Iowa has never been one of the teams involved -- until now. The event honor Jim Valvano, the legendary NC State coach who lost his life to cancer, and raises money and awareness for cancer research. The battle against cancer is certainly one that is very near and dear to the hearts of the McCaffery family, and this game should feature three McCafferys -- Fran on the sideline and Connor and Pat, a cancer survivor himself, on the court.

A game like this is pretty much all upside for Iowa. Win and they'll have one of the most notable wins in recent program history, and a win that could look great if they're in position to challenge for a spot in the NCAA Tournament in March. Lose and, well, falling to a likely Top 5 team and NCAA title contender is nothing to be ashamed about. Give em hell, Hawks.
