Iowa racked up three wins over Maryland last weekend. Just for good measure, the Hawkeye Twitter account decided to add a fourth:

Better luck next year, Maryland.

Field Hockey

  • Iowa's #1 ranked Field Hockey team went on the road for a pair of conference matches last week and came away with a pair of 2-1 wins against #6 Rutgers and #7 Maryland.
  • Friday's match against Rutgers swung on a 16-second period in the second quarter with Iowa scoring and following up almost instantly with another goal. Rutgers put up a fierce second half comeback attempt, but Iowa's defense held strong, surrendering only one goal and securing the win. Unfortunately, Iowa's shutout streak came to an end after 561 minutes, but the win was a more than acceptable consolation prize.
  • The Hawkeyes had a day to rest but then were right back at it, taking on #7 Maryland. After a hard-fought, scoreless first half, the third quarter looked to be more of the same until Leah Zellner broke the stalemate with a goal late in the third quarter. Maryland found an equalizer, but Maddy Murphy responded quickly with the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter. The win improved the Hawks record to 12-0 (4-0) and gave them their 7th victory over a ranked opponent this season.
  • Iowa continues to get their opponent's best shots and they continue to glance off this team like it's nothing. They won hard-fought defensive affairs and filled up the scoresheet. They come up clutch when it's needed most. There's nothing to add that we haven't already said and if you're not paying attention yet, it's on you at this point. This team is elite.
  • Iowa's two top-10 wins earned them two weekly awards, with Maddy Murphy winning Offensive Player of the Week in the Big Ten and Lokke Stribos winning Defensive Player of the Week.

Soccer

  • The Hawkeye soccer team kicked off their weekend with a convincing 2-0 win over Maryland on Thursday night. Hayley Rydberg put Iowa on the board in the first half and Alyssa Walker put the game away with a late goal.
  • The Hawkeyes followed up the win with a close match against Michigan State but came up just short in the 2-1 defeat. Iowa scored early in the game and their defense looked strong for most of the match. It wasn't until the 71st minute that Michigan State found an equalizer, but the score seemed to knock the Hawkeyes off balance a bit and the Spartans found a winner ten minutes later.
  • Iowa was protecting the lead for so long on Sunday that the fluky equalizer from MSU felt like a gut punch. MSU's second goal came off a rebound after goalie Jordyn Wickes made an amazing save too. It's a tough way to end the weekend but the Hawks are continuing to show that they belong in the Big Ten and are markedly improved from last year. They'll eventually need to find a way to turn some of the late losses into wins, but the team continues to look the part, which gives me hope that the results will soon follow.

Cross Country

  • The Iowa cross country team was in action last week at the Gans Creek Classic. The women's team had a great showing finishing in third with 101 points. The men's team ran strong as well, finishing fifth with 138 points.
  • The women were led by Kelli Tosic, who finished 12th in the 6,000-meter race. All five of the Hawks' scorers finished inside the top 30.
  • On the men's side, Noah Healy led the way with a fifth-place finish. Nick Trattner also earned a top-10 finish, finishing 9th.
  • Iowa's strong weekend performance, fueled by 23 personal bests, earned the Hawks a top 10 ranking in the Midwest Region.

Swimming and Diving

  • The Hawkeye swim and dive team participated in their first meet of the season last week, falling just short against Northern Iowa.
  • The Hawks won nine events during the meet, including the first three in the women's 200 medley relay, the women's 1000-meter freestyle, won by Anna Brooker, and the 200 free, which was won by Kennedy Gilbertson.
  • Alexandra Olesiak won three individual events at the meet to go along with her win in the 200 medley relay. She earned gold in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke, as well as the 200 IM.
  • Iowa also swept the podium in the 1 and 3-meter dives, with Sam Tamborski, Sarah Ballard, and Makayla Hughbanks finishing 1-2-3 in both events.
  • Iowa will be back in the pool Friday when they host Minnesota.

Volleyball

  • Iowa had another tough weekend on the volleyball court, falling in straight sets to both Michigan State and Michigan.
  • The match against Michigan State was often close, but Iowa gave up a run after being tied at 19-19 and didn't have enough to recover in the first set and faced a similar fate in both the second and third sets. Iowa continues to put together strong spurts but hasn't found a way to pull ahead and seems to succumb to a scoring run at some point in every set. When you can't put winning points together it leaves you with little room for error and the Hawkeyes have found that out the hard way early in the season.
  • The story was much of the same against Michigan. In the first set, the match was close until Michigan rallied to take a 14-10 lead that turned into a 25-16 win. The second set started with Michigan taking a 6-1 lead that Iowa could never fight back from. The third set was tied 16-16 before Michigan put together a 5-1 run to take a 21-17 lead they would not relinquish.
  • The Hawkeyes will be on BTN Wednesday (6 PM CT) when they take on Wisconsin on the road.
