I try to remind myself every year that college sports go by fast. The football season seems to reach its end before I'm even used to the Saturday routine and many of the Olympic sports go by even faster. Hawkeye soccer is over, Hawkeye golf is hibernating until spring, and even field hockey's regular season has already ended.
There were only three Iowa teams in action last week, so we'll stick to a whip-around and cover all of the Hawks in action. Don't take your seasons for granted, they're gone before you know it.
Hawkeye Whip-around:
- The lone Hawkeye victory this week came from the field hockey team, who picked up a 1-0 win on Senior Day over Michigan State. It was a cathartic victory for the Hawks, who hadn't scored in almost three weeks. Iowa's lone goal came in the third period when Annika Herbine found the back of the net off of a penalty corner. Defense continues to be a strength for the Hawkeyes, as they held MSU to just two shots in the game. Anthe Nejziel earned Defensive Player of the Week honors yet again for her strong performance. No doubt there are quite a few opposing goal-scorers who are counting down the days until her graduation, as she's been a defensive force throughout her time at Iowa. Next up for the Hawks is the conference tournament. Iowa's late-season slump dropped them a bit in the standings, so they'll kick off the tournament as the #5 seed against #4 Michigan Thursday morning at 10 AM. It will be Iowa's third match against the Wolverines in as many weeks. Here's hoping familiarity leads to an Iowa breakthrough.

- Iowa cross country took part in the Big Ten Championships last week with the men finishing 7th and the women finishing 14th. Nick Trattner was the top finisher for the men, placing 29th, while the top finisher for the women was Emma Gordon in 67th. The Hawks will look to continue to improve their times in the NCAA Regional on November 11th.
- Hawkeye volleyball dropped a pair of matches last week, losing three sets to one against Maryland and three sets to zero to Northwestern. It was a reminder that progress is not going to be linear for this young team. Coach Barnes is intent on building a new system and forcing their offense through the middles. When it works, it keeps the defense off balance and opens up the rest of the offense. Last week, though, Iowa's passing wasn't consistent enough to open up the middles and the Hawks couldn't take advantage when they had single blocks on the outside. Against Northwestern, in particular, it seemed like the Cats knew exactly how to counter the Hawkeye plan. Chalk it up to their highly sought-after tech coordinator (and brother of yours truly) and the scouting report he put together. Northwestern has really turned it around since he joined the team. Not saying, just saying, maybe Coach Barnes should reach out.
