Iowa football has been busy adding commitments to their 2023 recruiting class on the offensive of the ball in recent weeks, but yesterday they picked up a key get on the defensive side of the ball.

You love to see it.
Merrieweather is a 6'3", 245 lb prospect out of Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, Michigan. Rivals and 247 Sports both rank him a 3* prospect; he chose Iowa over offers from Cincinnati, Oregon, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Syracuse, Purdue, Pitt, and a host of MAC programs. Rivals classifies Merrieweather as an athlete, but Iowa is projecting him as a defensive end in college. You can see a bit of that athleticism on display here, as he swats a pass out of the air, recovers it, and runs the ball back for a touchdown:

Looks like he's already used to making big plays on defense in black and gold...
Merrieweather elaborated on his decision to commit to Iowa in a brief interview with Rivals:

And you can check out more highlights from Merrieweather below:
There's certainly a lot to like there in terms of his speed and quickness, as well as his ability to close on the passer (or ballcarrier). He may need to fine-tune his technique a bit against Big Ten blockers, but there will be time to do that. The raw materials here look plenty exciting, though.
Welcome to Iowa, Kenneth.
