It turns out that having a running backs coach who spent the better part of a decade coaching high school football in Florida pays dividends. This was never more apparent than last night, when 3-star running back (4-stars on Rivals) Jaziun Patterson committed to the Hawkeyes. The hat game Tweet:
First off: holy hell this guy’s offer list. Let’s just hit the highlights: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State and Texas A&M. That’s just the highlights. There’s a lot more. To beat out Alabama on an offensive lineman from the Midwest is one thing. To beat out Alabama on a running back from the South is quite another. This is nothing short of a coup for Ladell Betts and Kirk Ferentz. So, why all the interest? Well, here’s some tape:
Stats don’t mean a whole lot due to the COVID season but he rushed 63 times for 511 yards and seven touchdowns in Class 8A, Florida’s largest high school classification. That’s a crisp 8.1 YPC. Patterson’s head coach labeled him as a “downhill runner” but if you watch that video, he clearly has more in his toolbox than “run straight go boom.” With Tyler Goodson squarely in control of Iowa’s running game and Leshon Williams your probable next man in, Patterson could redshirt his first year. After that, though, it’s anyone’s ballgame and he’ll be right in the mix. Welcome aboard, Jaziun.
